What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is an internal emotional state, associated with feelings of worry and fear about future uncertainties, potential dangers, or situations we perceive as possibly negative. This emotion manifests through physical symptoms in the body, such as an increased heart rate, sweating, muscle tension, numbness, or intrusive, cyclical negative thoughts. Anxiety is an evolutionary response that serves to prepare the body for self-protection in the face of danger.
However, anxiety can sometimes exceed its natural function, arising not only in the face of actual threats but also in everyday situations. For example, giving a presentation at work, sitting an exam, dealing with health concerns, or experiencing negative thoughts in social situations can trigger anxiety. In such cases, anxiety might help a person become more alert and prepared. Yet, when anxiety is constant, long-lasting, and excessive, it can negatively affect a person’s quality of life. At this point, it may turn into a disorder, posing a risk to overall health.
Anxiety can be experienced differently from one person to another. Some people may feel it intensely, while others might experience it more mildly or in different forms. When anxiety becomes persistent, it may indicate a condition known as an anxiety disorder. In such cases, anxiety can interfere with daily life, impair work and academic performance, and weaken social relationships.
There are many ways to cope with anxiety. First and foremost, it is important to understand it and accept that it is a normal human emotion. Relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, and physical activity can help manage anxiety. Additionally, recognising situations that trigger anxiety, challenging associated thoughts, and developing a more constructive perspective are effective strategies for managing anxious feelings.
Furthermore, seeking professional help is a significant step in coping with anxiety. Psychotherapy is an effective method for treating anxiety disorders and helping individuals manage their symptoms in a healthy way. When managed with the right approaches, anxiety can become a strength, enhancing one’s ability to face and overcome life’s challenges.
